The Grammy-nominated group New Edition comes from Boston, Massachusetts. The five-member band was formed by singer-songwriter and producer Bobby Brown in hopes of replicating the success of Jackson 5 in the '80s. The original line-up included Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant. Today, New Editions tours with the original line-up with singer Johnny Gill who joined in 1987. New Edition rose to prominence in the ‘80s and became the original “boyband.” The group released their debut album, Candy Girl, in 1983. The debut effort performed moderately on the chart, peaking at number 14 on Billboard’s R&B Albums. The following year, the group released their breakthrough effort and major label debut. The 1984 album topped the R&B chart and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200. The album spawned several hit singles, including “Cool It Now,” “Mr. Telephone Man,” and “Lost in Love.” Its success led to a double-platinum status after selling more than two million copies in the U.S.
New Edition moved on to release several more chart-performing and critically acclaimed albums. Their 1996 effort, Home Again, topped the Billboard 200 and R&B charts. The album dropped five highly-regarded hits, including the number 1 gold-selling R&B single, “Hit Me Off.” Throughout New Editions’ four-decade career, the group has sold 20 million albums worldwide and earned numerous accolades. In the ‘80s, they received two American Music Awards and a Soul Train Award. In 2017, they were inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BET Awards. Last year, New Edition was inducted into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.
